The Wisdom of Beer Dude 1998

We invite you to take advantage of the Beer Dude's wisdom. Each week or so the Beer Dude will answer your questions.

Send a question to the Beer Dude.

December 8, 1998:

My Question is: What is mulled ale? How is it made? (ie spices? which beers work well for this concoction?)

Answer: "Mulled" or "Spiced" Ale is a rich, heavy Ale with added honey and spices. Best served warmer than room temp (85+ F). The spices can be anything from Honey, Caraway, Maple, Ginger root, Coriander to Juniper almost anything you want.
The best examples that I know of for this concoction are; Eccentric Ale (Kalamazoo Brewing Co.),and Grant's Spiced Ale (Yakima Brewing Co.) This type of brew is made just like an ale or Barleywine, it just has a larger amount of ingredients. Mulled ales are usally brewed for winter consummation and have a nice kick to them.

December 2, 1998:

My Question is: What are the little bubbles that cling to the inside of the beer class called?

Answer: Well Joe Bob, those little bubbles are called Brussels Lace.
